Charity insurance FAQs
Answers to the questions trustees and charity leaders ask us most often.
Yes. Trustees can be held personally liable for mismanagement, breach of trust, negligent decisions or failure to follow Charity Commission guidance — even if they volunteer unpaid. Standard business policies rarely cover trustees personally. Trustee indemnity is essential and covers legal costs, settlements and compensation.
Volunteer personal accident insurance covers unpaid volunteers whilst engaged in authorised charity work. It excludes paid staff and trustees (who should be covered under employers liability or indemnity policies). It typically covers accidental injury, permanent disability and death, with benefits paid directly to the volunteer or their dependants.
Property owned or occupied by your charity (buildings, equipment, contents) must be declared and insured. This includes leased or borrowed properties used for charity operations. We arrange cover for buildings, contents, theft, accidental damage and business interruption. Undisclosed property can invalidate claims.
The Charity Commission expects trustees to put reasonable safeguards in place against risks, including appropriate insurance. Whilst no single policy is legally mandated, most charities require public liability (compulsory in many cases), property cover, trustee indemnity and volunteer accident cover. We help you benchmark your cover against Commission guidance.
Cost varies widely based on charity size, activity type, income, premises and claims history. Small local charities might pay £200–600 annually; larger organisations £1,000–5,000+. Specialist underwriters and pooled rates significantly reduce costs compared to standard business policies. We'll give you a personalised quote based on your charity's specific profile.
